I’m officially a suburban housewife.

One husband, three kids, a house and two cars.  Yes, I’m a suburban housewife for sure.  However, if there was still any debate, this post will most certainly confirm my status.

During the winter months I always keep the ingredients on-hand for one specific dinner.  It’s my go-to on those evenings when it’s cold and dark and only good ol’ fashioned comfort food will do.  Yet it’s still good enough to serve when company is over.  And it’s a hit with both adults and kids alike.

Naturally, I turned to my trusty recipe last week when the baby was fussy.  Again.  When my four-year old couldn’t seem to shake his sassy attitude.  And my mischievous two-year old suddenly looked like an angel.

So what is this amazing recipe?  It’s meatloaf {my grandmother’s recipe} and it’s a favorite.  Yes, meatloaf.  I know, I know – meatloaf has a bad rap, but trust me on this one.  Every time I serve it, I’m asked for the recipe.  I even have friends {who shall remain nameless} who ask for it when coming over for dinner.

It’s super easy to make.  Try it.  You can thank me later.

Grandmama’s meatloaf

3 slices of bread cut up into small pieces {I use whole wheat bread and cut off the crusts}

1 cup milk

1 egg

1 lb. ground beef

1/4 c minced onion {I end up using most of a small white onion}

1 1/4 tsp. salt

1/4 tsp pepper

1/4 tsp celery salt

1/4 tsp garlic salt

1/4 tsp sage

1/4 tsp mustard

1 tbsp Worcester sauce

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  Toss all the ingredients into a large bowl in the order listed and mix well {your choice – wooden spoon or hands.}  Once mixed, put the meat into a loaf pan {I spray mine first.}  Bake for 1 hour.  {My oven runs hot and on the convection setting mine is done in about 45 minutes.}

So it’s not the most glamorous looking dinner, but it’s perfect when served with garlic mashed potatoes and a tossed green salad.  Yum.

  1. From one housewife to another, that meatloaf is delicious. And, as far as friends who shall remain nameless, lets be honest…my husband has no shame in making requests, especially when its your meatloaf!

  2. Yum! I love meatloaf…it is serious comfort food. Unfortunately, the recipe I have is a little bit involved…and it’s my favorite. So it takes some time to make it.

    Anyway, your recipe sounds really good, too!
