A birthday surprise.

Jim, Maribeth, Mom, Grandma, Carol, Diana and Ralph

If you’ve met my mom, then you know that she is kind and generous and she doesn’t like drawing any attention to herself.  And with a big birthday coming up she was adamant that she wanted little {or no} fanfare.

Yet a celebration was in order.

Henry placed the candles close together explaining that it would make blowing them out easier.

Keeping things small we settled on a party that would include my mom’s siblings, her mother and our immediate family.  And in keeping with the theme of big milestones we also celebrated my grandmother’s 90th birthday.  Pretty darn cool don’t you think?

It was a total surprise.  We even pulled of the cliché of hiding behind the couch and  jumping up and yelling *surprise!*  Clearly mom had no idea, and as the woman who endlessly plans family events it was a true joy to host and let her be the guest.

Surprise!

Our attempts at a group photo.  Maybe next time?

It was a blessing to celebrate my mom and her mom, women who are such a blessing to so many people.  It was perfect.

I’m so lucky to be her daughter. Happy birthday, Mom!  Love you.

Grandma

Happy birthday Grandma!
